Las Cruces' Trego Hits All the Right Notes  | Heavy Hearts Making Tucson 4.0 Team Heavy Hitters

More than 40 senior USTA teams from across USTA Southwest have made the journey to Tucson's Hilton El Conquistador Golf & Tennis Resort, May 14-16 for the USTA Southwest Senior League Section Championships, and after all was said and done eight new champions were crowned.

In Women's 3.0 - Northern Arizona's Sedona Sizzlers captured the championship, narrowly outdistancing second place Tucson Saddlebrooke. Both teams were tied with 4-1 records, but Sedona clinched by virtue of more matches won (9 to 8).

In Men's 3.0 - Both SAZ's Sun City West and the other SAZ team (Kaumeyer) each finished with 3-1 records in the three-team pool, but Sun City's two-court lead in matches won proved to be the clincher

In Women's 3.5 - SAZ's Westward Look team hclinched the division with a 4-1 record. The SAZ girls had an uncatchable two-match lead going into the final day.

In Men's 3.5 - Central Arizona (Coleman) finished with a spotless 5-0 record, and put in a dominating team performance for the weekend, winning 13 of a total 15 matches played.

In Women's 4.0 - A team from Greater El Paso (Tennis West) snuck from third place to first on the final day on the strength of a 3-0 match win over the NAZ Volley Girls team. Two other teams - Southern Arizona and Central Arizona - also finished with 4-1 flight records in one of the more competitive divisions of the weekend.

In Men's 4.0 - Central Arizona (Hearshman) needed to down Southern Arizona (Reffkin Tennis Center) on the final day to clinch, and they did just that, winning 2-1.

In Women's 4.5 - Central Arizona (Johnson) was the only undefeated team in a fou-team pool, so they easily clinched the crown.

In Men's 4.5 - CAZ (Mandel) finished a perfect 3-0 in pool play to clinch the victory.

Thanks to the Hilton El Conquistador and to our volunteers as well. Lastly, thanks to the players for attending this weekend's event, including the 50s themed Sock Hop Player Party that featured more than 250 Bobby Soxers and cool Daddy-o"s.

Thanks also to the generous contributions of players towards our Southwest Tennis Foundation "tipjars". We raised over $700 just from our League Players. Those contributions will go to help tennis programs/activities across the Section and to help fund college scholarships for need-based juniors. Way to go!
