Rules Regarding Championships
  • The winners are determined by the season win/loss records.
  • If there is a tie to determine a team for the playoffs, the methods on p.14 (the USTA tiebreaker method) of the 2005 Regulations book will be used to break the tie.
  • For each level, the season win/loss record will determine seeding. (For playoff dates, see “Important Dates” below.)
  • In regard to the local league season and playoffs, any team that plays in a “single round robin” group and goes undefeated, will advance to the finals in the local playoffs. The second & third place teams in that group would play each other to see who plays the undefeated team in the finals (see playoff format below).
The method for determining how many teams from each level will participate in the NNMD playoffs is as follows:
Teams in a group Number of round robins No of teams in playoffs
1-4 As many as the teams agree to have none
5 three (12 matches) 2, if none is undefeated
none, if one team is undefeated
6 two (10 matches) 2, if none is undefeated
none, if one team is undefeated
7 two (12 matches) 2, if none is undefeated
none, if one team is undefeated
8 two (14 matches) 2, if none is undefeated
none, if one team is undefeated
9 - 10 one 2, if none is undefeated
3, if one team is undefeated
11 or more one 4, if none is undefeated
3, if one is team undefeated

BE AWARE: For teams who are very close in the standings for the playoffs, only the teams who have played all of their matches will be considered for the playoffs. The only exception is if the remaining un-played matches mean nothing.

Example of the rule
2 teams go to the playoffs at a particular level; there are 10 matches to be played in the season; the following are the standings at the deadline:

  • Team A = 8 wins & 2 losses
  • Team B = 7 wins & 2 losses
  • Team C = 7 wins & 3 losses
  • Team D = 5 wins & 5 losses
  • Team E = 2 wins & 7 losses
Teams A & C go to the playoffs because they have played all of their matches, while Team B only played 9 matches.

Example of exception to the rule
2 teams go to the playoffs at a particular level; there are 10 matches to be played in the season; the following are the standings at the deadline:

  • Team A = 8 wins & 1 loss
  • Team B = 8 wins & 2 losses
  • Team C = 5 wins & 5 losses
  • Team D = 4 wins & 5 losses
  • Team E = 2 wins & 7 losses
Teams A & B go to the playoffs because, even though Team A did not play all 10 matches, it will not change the standings.

PLAYOFFS:

  • The local Adult League playoffs must be held at a facility which has a minimum of 15 outdoor courts on the last weekend of June.
  • The Mixed League playoffs will be played at a specified site on a specified weekend in August.
  • Adult League Sectionals are usually scheduled by the SWS to be played around the first weekend in August; therefore, our District winners must be determined a month before Sectionals. This time period gives the players time to get the best rates on flights to the Sectional location and gives the captains and SWS office enough time to complete all paperwork.
  • Whenever there are 4 teams in any league playoffs, the seedings are as follows: 1st place plays 4th place and 2nd place plays 3rd place. Each time the higher seed is the home team.
  • In the Senior and Super Senior Leagues, whenever a level is divided into two groups, one in Santa Fe and one in Albuquerque, the winner from each group will play the finals of those playoffs in Santa Fe on the even years and in Albuquerque on the odd years.
CAPTAINS, PLEASE REMIND YOUR PLAYERS OF THE FOLLOWING:
  • A 10-point Match Tie-Breaker MUST be played in all leagues if the score is tied after two sets and no break is to be taken after the second set.
  • A player must play in two local league matches to be eligible to play at Sectionals. (A win by default counts as a match played.)
  • To receive a DNTRP computer rating for 2005 league season play, a player must play two matches in Adult, Mixed, Senior or Super Senior Leagues or in Grand Prix NTRP tournaments. To default a match in any of the leagues doesn’t count, but a player who wins by default any of the leagues gets credit for a match played.
  • Be aware that new ratings come out on the Internet (through TennisLink) in mid-November and the appeal period is until mid-December.
  • Remind players the ten minute warm-up includes serves, good conduct on the court, no coaching from others and only players are allowed on the court.
  • USTA memberships need to be renewed in order to play in USTA leagues or NTRP tournaments.
  • Elite Players (self-rated 4.0 players and above, ex-college, ex-pros, etc) – must complete a player history form and submit it to the SW Section and receive approval from the SW Section to participate at their self-rated level before participating in a match. Failure to report or omission of information regarding a player’s tennis history will subject the player, the captain and/or others who condoned inaccurate self-ratings to sanctions and disqualifications.
  • A computer-derived rating is valid for three (3) years for individuals 60 years of age prior to or during the championship year and for five (5) years for all others, or until another computer rating is generated.
  • “3-Match requirement prior to Nationals” – A player is eligible to advance to National Championships if that player has played on that same team in at least three (3) matches through sectional championships.
